ZEBRA FINCHES

Zebra Finches are one of the easiest of the exotic finches to own. Zebra Finches are an Australia bird and have been pets for over 100 years. Zebra Finches do not have a calm manner and are a very lively bird. You should never own just one you should always buy them in a pair, they are very social birds, which requires you own a pair (one female and one male). Zebra finches are a great pet for the “bird watcher” who enjoys watching birds but does not mind that zebra finches will never be tame like other domesticated birds.

Zebra Finches are very active and require plenty of space for their size. Zebra Finches need to be able to fly around inside their cage. They should have about 20 inches of space inside of their cage allowing them to fly around.

Their cage should be a rectangular shape and between 28 and 32 inches long.

Due to the size of a zebra finch the bars in the cage should only be ½ inch apart. It does not matter if the bars are horizontal or vertical. You will also need to buy the smaller bars for inside the birdcage due to the size of your zebra finches feet. One of our staff remembers at the pet store will be able to show you what size is best for your zebra finches.

You should place your birdcage in the same spot / location every time. You do not want to place it at a heavy traffic area, as this will upset your zebra finches. You should not place the cage in fount of a window; you will need to place it in a draft free spot. Zebra Finches should be kept at a normal room temperature

You will need two dishes that attached to the sides of your birdcage. One will be for water and the other for zebra finch birdseed. You will need to buy birdseed that is made for Finches only. You will also need to give your finches’ mineral grits and these can be places on top of the finch birdseed. The mineral grits help to make sure your finch is getting the necessary mineral they need.

At the bottom of the cage you will need to put about one-half inch of fresh corncob.

We recommend you buy a hollow coconut nest and / or a wickerwork’s nest for your zebra finches cage. This gives your zebra finches a place to sleep in at night.

Zebra Finches enjoy making nests even when they do not need one for eggs. You should always allow them to do this and it is amazing to watch. You will need a box of nesting materials. The box of nesting materials clips to the side of the cage for the bird to pull out when ever they wish. The box of nesting materials which clips to your birdcage can be bought at V.I. Pets.

You will need to clean your bird’s cage once every week, replacing the fresh corncob. Once a month you will need to clean everything in the cage (bars, sides of the cage, the entire cage and its contents). You should clean the water and birdseed dish daily when you are giving them fresh water and fresh finch birdseed.
