Ferrets can be docile and friendly
when they are tamed at a younger age. All our ferrets
are de-scented and fixed when we sell them. Ferrets
can be house trained much like a cat can be. They
are very playful, yet known as mischievous. They enjoy
getting exercise like talking walks on leashes but
will escape if given the chance.
LIFE EXPECTANCY: With proper care ferrets life expectancy
is 5 to 7 years.
A minimum cage for a ferret is 36 x 24 x 18 inches
high. They should be housed in a plastic bottom with
a wire cage. They will need a sleeping area (a plastic
igloo). They prefer hammocks to sleep in which hang
in their cage.
For your ferrets bedding it is best to use Care Fresh
about 2 inches thick on the bottom of your ferrets
cage. Care Fresh is not only safe for your ferret
but will absorb nicely. You should never use cedar
shaving or other wood elements; these products will
cause respiratory problems with your ferret.
You will need a food and water dish, which are made
of ceramic or porcelain. They need to be heavy or
your ferret will always tip them over.
You will also need to give your ferret Furotone every
other day for their skin and coat.
You will need to clean your ferret’s food dishes
daily. Your ferrets cage will need to cleaned several
times a week, more if your ferret is in a smaller
cage and not if your ferret is not using a littler
pan.
You will need to feed your ferret, ferret food every
day along with multi-vitamins in their water every
day. You can NOT give your ferret sweets of any kind,
however there is a wide variety of treats made for
your ferret that are not only good for him but will
help you with training.
You will need to either cut your ferrets nails once
a month or bring your ferret into the pet store to
have them cut.
Ferrets are up to date on all of there shots when
we sell them at V.I. Pets, however you will need to
take your ferret to your vet for their annual boosters
and rabies vaccination. These are required by law
in the state of Michigan. Ferrets do carry most canine
diseases so that is why it is important to vaccinate
against them.
