CHINCHILLAS

Chinchillas have a long tail and are very furry. They are normally gray to dark gray color with a lighter color on their belly, they also come in designer colors, we carry a variety.. They are about 10 to 14 inches long and weigh 1 to 1.5 pounds. With a proper diet and proper care a chinchillas life expectance is 8 to 10 years. They love to make noises (talk) at night when they are most active. Chinchillas are extremely curious creatures.

LIFE EXPECTANCY: Chinchillas life expectancy with proper care is 12 to 15 years.

WHAT AND WHEN TO FEED YOUR CHINCHILLA: During the day when your Chinchilla is not active you should only provide them with hay and water. During the evening when your animal becomes active you should give him chinchilla pellets and fresh hay. Be sure you remove soiled hay from outside the hay bowl. You should also give your chinchilla treats during playtime or exercise. Always be sure your Chinchilla has fresh water.

TREATS: You may give your chinchilla small pieces of apple or carrot, a single raisin or half a hazelnut or peanut per day. On a rare occasion a small piece of hard white bread or roll. Your chinchilla will also need chew treats. The best ones for your chinchilla contain sunflower seed and nuts and are in the shape of sticks or hearts that you can buy in pet stores.

11 RULES FOR THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES:

1. We recommend a wire cage with a plastic bottom, a rabbit cage. The cage should be at least 24 inches long, 16 inches deep, and 20 inches high.

2. Their sleeping hutch (house) should be either a wooden hutch or a plastic igloo. Your chinchillas sleeping house is not just for sleeping at night but napping in during the day. If you have more then one chinchilla you will need a larger sleeping house plus a few extras so if your chinchilla’s need time away from one another they can do so.

3. You will need to have a sandbox available during the evening activities for your chinchilla to take a sand bath in. You should buy a porcelain chinchilla dust bathhouse to help keep down on the mess your chinchilla will make when taking a bath. V.I. Pets sells baths and special sand to place in it, which are made just for your chinchilla.

4. You will need to have shelves for sitting on at various heights for your chinchilla to have fun with when they are playing.

5. You will need driftwood or shelves (anything washable) for your chinchilla to climb on, they will also use them for running up and down to play and exercise.

6. You will need to have chew blocks which are made for just chinchilla’s for your chinchilla to chew on in their cage at all time. You may also have wooden chew stick which are made for all small animals in there cage at all times and these come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

7. You will need a staircase in the cage for exercise and play. You should locate the sleeping house high off the cage floor with a staircase leading up to it. This will make it so the staircase and sleeping house can also be used as a lookout seats.

8. The bottom of the cage will need to be covered with care fresh or corncob about 1 inch thick.

9. You will need a water bottle with a stopper. The water bottle should be filled everyday with fresh water.

10. A hard plastic dish for hay is ok but they will chew it up. Hay can be placed next to the food dish or use a hayrack.

11. The food dish will also need to be ceramic and should be heavy so the chinchilla cannot easily spill his food.
