BETTAS

Bettas are a very beautiful tropical fish with long fins that originate from Southeast Asia. They come in all shades of solid colors such at reds, blues, and greens. They also come in marble coloring and half colors. They are very different from most fish being they do not require air to be pumped into their tank. Many people place betas in a vase with a plant above them in the vase for decoration. Bettas are known as the fighting fish, this is because you can not place more than one betta in a tank together or they will fight one another other until death (Siamese fighting fish). A male and female can live together if in a large enough tank, at least a 10-gallon. Two females can always live together.

Bettas are from Southeast Asia, where they have “monsoon” weather. In the dry season they can live in a tablespoon of water. They have a special breathing device called a “labyrinth”. Which allows them to gulp air from the surface.

The life expectancy of a betta is 2 to 4 years if you take good care of them.

When it comes to placing your betta in a tank, there are many different options. You can place them in a small fish bowl, a larger vase, or we sell very decorative tanks made just for bettas. Betta’s can be kept in small or large aquariums successfully if the water quality is good and there is not too much current.

You should do 50% water change weekly, but may be done more if needed.

Your betta can be kept at room temperature, a more appropriate temperature is 72 – 76 degrees. Lighting like you need is fine for your betta, they do not need lighting like you have on other fish tanks.

At the bottom of your betta tank you will need about 1 to 1 ½ inches of gravel or marbles.

We recommend you use Betta Plus with your tap water when setting up your bettas tank or doing water changes. This makes tap or well water safe for your fish.

Bettas should be fed 5 pellets a day or every other day. Bloodworms are their natural food and are a great treat for them.

Bettas are not only beautiful but a very interesting fish. We carry a great book in our stores about them that you will enjoy if you enjoy your betta.
